On Friday June 12th, the Calgary Amateur Kickboxing and MuayThai Association with Mike Miles MuayThai & Kickboxing Ltd promoted their latest fight event called "H2H Stand Up and Fight - Unbreakable".

Taking place at the Silver Dollar Casino, the event took place on the final night of the Stanley Cup playoff, so there were concerns about attendance to the event. However, worries were quickly put at ease because the event was completely sold out with people being turned away at the door by the casino staff.

The event boasted some top international fights from Scotland, England, the USA and Canada, and highlighted some excellent wars. On the program as the Main Event was a Professional WMC Lightheavyweight Commonwealth Title bout sanctioned by the Calgary Combative Sports Commission and the WMC. The amateur bouts were sanctioned by the CMTC-A and the IFMA

A quick thank you goes out to the professionalism and the support of the coaches, William Judd, Robert Thomson, Sincy Outhaivong, Brad Wall, and Mike Miles.

A lot of individuals really worked hard for this event, and there is a huge nod and thank you to so many. Huge appreciation to all the sponsors. Much thanks to all the local media for really getting behind this event! Thank you for keeping MuayThai alive and flourishing in Calgary.

Scott Clark

Barry Denholm
(SCT)

WIN Scott Clark
1st Round KO

Clark vs Denholm

The Main Event featured Canada's Scott 'Pitbull' Clark battling against Barry Denholm from Scotland. At stake was the WMC Commonwealth MuayThai Title in the Lightheavyweight Division (matchmaking was done by the WMC who felt both athletes were contenders for the title). As usual for Clark, he was the smaller of the two athletes, almost six inches shorter than the Scot. The bout opened with Denholm pressuring forward while Clark moved side to side to provide angles and stay away from Denholm's favorite technique, the elbow. Denholm delivered a few kicks while pursuing the Canadian but caught nothing but air. Clark pounced in with a counter low kick which caught the Scot heavily and successfully. The kick was very hard and it showed by bruising Denholm's thigh immediately. The Scottish athlete continued with the pressure while Clark moved laterally. As Denholm came forward Clark stopped his movement and changed directions moving forward with a heavy body shot which stopped Denholm in his tracks. Shrugging off the shot, Denholm continued moving forward and Clark crashed forward throwing an extremely heavy and quick right hook which caught the Scottish athlete mid flight. Denholm did not even see the blow come in and he went down and could not get up in time for the count. Clark was to win the title at 1:00 Minute of the first round by KO.

"Scotty worked very hard for this fight. He was in tip top shape, and was very conditioned for this fight. We knew the height and the broken rhythm of Denholm could cause a big problem. We are all surprised at the quick ending, but that is the nature of the sport; it is very dynamic. All the hard work for our champion Scott was in the gym and it paid off tonight", said coach Mike Miles. Congratulations to WMC Commonwealth Lightheavyweight MuayThai Champion, Scott 'Pitbull' Clark!

Sandra Bastian
(Calgary CAN)

Anna Zucchelli
(GBR)

WIN Sandra Bastian
Decision

Bastian vs Zucchelli

In a battle featuring two of the top female athletes in the world, Canada's Sandra 'Heart' Bastian squared off against Britain's Anna 'The Ginger Warrior' Zucchelli. Zucchelli was coming off winning the IFMA European Championships in Latvia in May. The bout opened with Zucchelli spending most of her time delivering probing low tiips at Bastian's lead knee. Though none landed successfully, Zucchelli was to continue to attempt to apply pressure at the Canadian. During the first round Zuchelli was to throw long range kicks that appeared to have her holding back on her power. In the first clinch of the two athletes, Zuccelli managed to spin and dump Bastian to the canvas - only once during the match. At the end of the first round Bastian was to admit that she had seriously injured her shoulder, and after the fight it was confirmed to be a torn muscle grouping.

The remainder of the fight see-sawed back and forth between the two athletes. Zucchelli continued to try and move forward, and surprisingly it appeared her power did not increase in her kicks. Bastian did not have her usual pizzazz in this bout and spent most of her time counter striking. The opening of the bout appeared stronger for the British girl, while the last rounds appeared more successful for the Canadian. The decision went to Bastian.

"I do not mean to sound terrible, but both of the two athletes looked like they were 'off' on this day. Neither athlete appeared to carry power in their shots. The decision surprised me because personally, I felt that Zucchelli could have swung the bout had she come up with a heartier performance. However, the officials scored it differently. All of these officials have participated in judging seminars conducted by the UK's Tony Myers, so they understand the scoring system as well. Mr. Judd protested the decision, and I feel that as a coach he did the right thing. Regardless of the outcome of the bout, these two athletes will have to meet again, as I am sure Zucchelli wants revenge and I know Sandra will want to redeem herself as well. Fullest respect to Anna Zucchelli and her coach Bill Judd", said Bastian's coach Mike Miles.

Mens Supermiddleweight

MuayThai

Peter Arbeau
(Calgary CAN)

Mike Carley
(USA)

WIN Mike Carley
Decision

In a Supermiddleweight full MuayThai rules bout, Canada's Peter Arbeau stepped into the ring against the USA's Mike 'Irish' Corley. Arbeau, who has looked impressive lately in his matches, failed to do so this night. He appeared off-balance and spent a lot of time throwing his techniques into Corley's arms. Corley delivered some nice jump knees and jump elbows, and in the eyes of the judges did enough to win the decision.

Mens Superwelterweight

Phil Leier
(Calgary CAN)

Sean McDonald
(SCT)

WIN Phil Leier
Split Decision

Leier vs McDonald

In a Superwelterweight bout, Canada's Phil 'No Fear' Leier battled against Scotland's Sean McDonald. Trying to break a tough streak of fights, Leier was game-on trying to impress tonight. In the first three rounds, Leier was calm and played chess with his obliging opponent from Scotland. "Leier looked much calmer in the opening two rounds than I have seen him in a long time, and held his own quite well", said coach Mike Miles.

In the third, Leier started exposing the fact that he was tired. He was breathing heavily and McDonald started pressuring more. Leier was not right out of the game however, as he was still landing some good punches and countering in the clinch, but McDonald seemed to be pressuring more and landing a little more consistently. The fight was close, and the split was given to Leier. "I was proud of Phil, how he has settled down to fight, but I feel that McDonald might have won the fight though it was not a shutout. McDonald is a good fighter, and hopefully these two will get a chance to tangle again", said Leier's coach Mike Miles.

Nate Smandych
(Calgary CAN)

Damon Faulkner
(GBR)

WIN Nate Smandych
Decision

The fight of the night featured Canada's 'Nasty' Nate Smandych battling against England's Damon 'Damage' Faulkner. On paper, Faulkner did not have the experience of Smandych, but the English lad had lived and trained in Thailand fighting at both Ragdamnern and Lumpini Stadium. Faulkner came to fight; and it showed, as he pressed forward throughout the whole fight with a very active work ethic. Smandych took some time to get his bearings and appeared to have timing problems in the first round and a half. However, the Canadian started landing a consistent roundhouse kick, tiip and straight punches. In the third, a huge spin elbow caught Faulkner and a mouse developed under his left eye. Smandych picked up his work ethic in the final rounds and appeared to land more effectively. Faulkner did not back down even for a second during this fight and made this the fight of the night.

"These two should tangle again under 5 Rounds of 3 Minutes. I liked watching Faulkner, as he has a very enthusiastic fight style. I was surprised how effective the Brit was, as Faulkner's style exposed a few faults in Nate's style. It was very close, but I did give the fight to Nate by an edge", said coach Mike Miles. The judges agreed. This was a very entertaining bout.

Womens

Modified MuayThai

Alana Dunbrack
(Calgary CAN)

Stephanie Stafford
(USA)

WIN Alana Dunbrack
Decision

Dunbrack vs Stafford

Coming off two MuayThai fights and winning the WBA World Classic in her weight division, Calgary's Alana 'Butch' Dunbrack was back in the ring a week later battling with Augusta, Georgia's WKKO US Champion Stephanie Stafford. This was a modified MuayThai rules bout. Stafford is known for low kick kickboxing, but was keen on fighting with knees this time. Both girls proved to be very scrappy and not afraid to exchange leather. The shorter Dunbrack would resort to the clinch once the two athletes were close, and Dunbrack proved to find her niche here. A great fight with Dunbrack winning the bout and now sitting on a four fight winning streak. Kudos to Stafford for battling under MuayThai rules.

Hakeem Dawodu
(Calgary CAN)

Martine Saleem
(CAN)

WIN Hakeem Dawodu
Decision

Calgary's Hakkem Dawodu stepped into the ring against Manitoba's Martine Saleem. The bout was fought under Modified MuayThai rules. Dawodu opened the bout very aggressively with good punches and some killer knees. Saleem kept very calm and provided some excellent resistance, but Dawodu was to take the nod on this bout.

Mens

Modified MuayThai

Ari Markle
(Calgary CAN)

Danny Rodriguez
(CAN)

EXHIBITION

Calgary's Ari Markle (1-0-0) had his opponent pull out at the last moment. Stepping up at the last moment in an exhibition bout that turned into a huge war, was Danny Rodriguez from Lethbridge (5-1-0). This was an incredible war that had the audience on their feet. Rodriguez landed some excellent punches, where the Calgarian landed some great kicks and huge knees in the clinch. This bout rock'n rolled back and forth, and was worth the price of admission alone.

Mens Lightheavyweight

Modified MuayThai

Lucas Greer
(Calgary CAN)

Rinze Valdemo
(CAN)

EXHIBITION

The opening bout featured Lightheavyweights Lucus Greer of Calgary battling against Rinze Valdema from Steinbach, Manitoba. The bout showed straight out desire from both athletes.

CMTC-A Team Canada Trials

As many of you know, I have been considering whether or not we should try to put together an extensive CMTC-A Team Canada Tournament. I have started kicking the idea around the country and there seems to be a lot of interest. I have included the CMTC-A board on this email, as it would be a CMTC-A event, and I have included the CAKMA board as this would be hosted in Calgary and I would need to rely on the CAKMA promotional team.

My idea is this:

All fights would be padded, we would have a few registration deadlines and then determine the fight brackets. Fighters could compete several times over the weekend. Proposed dates are September 11-13, 2009. Fighters must be current CMTC-A members. This entire process will help us build the national rankings.

The goal of this tournament is to bring the MuayThai community together across the country which will ultimately help Canada field a stronger and larger team, year after year and bring home more and more medals!

In terms of officials, this would also be an opportunity to bring in officials from several other jurisdictions to become CMTC-A certified. Just as we need to grow the sport for the athletes, the sport will not progress without officials. The event would allow CMTC-A to evaluate officials and hopefully add many new ones.

Naturally there are a lot of items not addressed here. If you have questions, comments, concers, suggestion.I would love to hear them!

Please let me know if you support this initiative and if you are able to help out. If there is sufficient support, I already have an invitation letter drafted and will want to get it out asap along with a registration form.
